Trauma, by definition, is unbearable and intolerable. It affects not only those who are directly exposed to it, but also those who are exposed to it vicariously. Trauma treatment challenges the traditional role of clinicians and presents a variety of pitfalls that can create ethical dilemmas. This webinar offers participants a framework for dealing with the overwhelming ethical challenges of trauma treatment. The definitions and prevalence of trauma and PTSD are introduced and the basic principles of trauma informed care are reviewed. Using these as a foundation, participants are then introduced to the principles of trauma informed ethical practice and the unique ethical considerations in trauma treatment. Vicarious traumatization and the importance of self-care are reviewed. The webinar concludes with a “roadmap” that clinicians can apply to the “overwhelm”, to assist in integrating all of the pieces of the trauma puzzle and to guide them on their journey as they embark on the important work of providing trauma treatment. Opportunities to apply the principles and steps of the roadmap will be offered. [Required for Trauma Response & Crisis Intervention Certificate Program]
