Trauma Risk and Recovery

Individuals with Developmental Disabilities are likely to experience some form of trauma during their lifetime. There is often a failure to recognize the effects of trauma on people with DD and the signs of past experiences may be overlooked or untreated. This session will explore the types of traumatic events that are common and why people with Disabilities are more at risk. Additionally, the connection between trauma and its impact on an individual’s biology and behavior will be discussed. Participants will be provided with an overview of trauma-informed approaches to support healing and recovery including therapeutic interventions, coping strategies, and positive identity development. About the Instructor

Melissa is Senior Training and Consultation Specialist at The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities at Rutgers Medical School. She provides training and technical assistance to community and state agencies, building capacity in behavior and mental health, and coordinating clinical supports for people with IDD/MI. Melissa holds a Master's Degree from the Rutgers School of Public Health. She holds a clinical certification through NADD. She has designed and delivered nationally recognized curricula, and coauthored the training manual, "Mental Health Approaches to Intellectual/Developmental Disability." She serves as the Chairperson of the NADD Direct Support Professional Committee and co-chairs the NADD US Policy Committee.
